SOUTHEAST ISLAND SCHOOL DISTIRCT

FY05 PROFILE

MISSION STATEMENT

All groups within Southeast Island School District (students, parents, community and staff) will work together to foster the development of positive, personal, social and academic skills, which will enable students to become productive, service-minded, global citizens. Our students will possess the skills necessary to excel in a rapidly changing world and become life-long learners.

SISD BOARD VISION

SISDÕs vision is to design and implement a standards-based education program that meets the needs of all students. The standards-based education program addresses content areas (reading, writing, mathematics, social studies, culture, science and technology) and life assets and work skills (personal, social emotional, service learning, and career development). Through educating the Òwhole childÓ current barriers to student learning will be minimized so as to increase choices and successes during and after school.

DISTRICT/COMMUNITY PROFILE

SISD is located on Prince of Wales and Baranoff Islands and encompasses all of the unincorporated areas in Southeast Alaska. There are eight school sites, Hollis, Howard Valentine, Hyder, Kasaan, Naukati, Port Alexander, Port Protection, and Thorne Bay. Schools range from one to seven teachers with a student population spanning from 12 to 75 students in the current school year. In addition to the eight school communities SISD offers a correspondence program to students living on float houses and in remote isolated areas in the Southeast. The projected total enrollment for the FY 2002 school year is approximately 260 students in grades K-12.

Each school has a local Advisory School Council (ASC) that is under the umbrella of a regional school board. ASCÕs provide input and feedback that informs decision-making at the school, district and school board level(s).

SISD communities have been heavily impacted by the decline in logging and fishing industries. A recent survey finds SISD schools and communities at an 83% poverty level. Resources available in SISD communities vary significantly. All communities have float plane air service.
